Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. Compression runs in your browser with ffmpeg; the video never leaves your device. The first time, the video engine (about 31 MB) is downloaded from this site.

What is CRF?

A constant-quality setting: a lower value means better quality and a bigger file, a higher value a smaller file. 23–28 gives a good balance for most videos.

What format is the output?

Always MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, which plays on phones, browsers and social media.

Does the resolution setting enlarge the video?

No. The value you choose is the video's short side (the width on a vertical video). If the video is already smaller, its size is kept.

Why does it take long?

ffmpeg in the browser runs on a single core, so long, high-resolution videos can take minutes. A faster compression speed saves time but gives a slightly bigger file.
